Getting to know our feelings

As humans, we experience a myriad of emotions. It’s not always easy to recognize a feeling as it is rarely one-dimensional. However, being able to identify what you are feeling enables you to make decisions about how best to manage it.

Here are some ways to better understand your feelings:

  • Broaden your emotional vocabulary, the right words paint a clearer picture of what you’re going through and can help you better express those feelings to others

  • Don't judge your emotions and acknowledge them with compassion. Whether it's feelings of sadness, fear, joy, or curiosity — all feelings are valid.

  • Write your thoughts down in a journal: As you write, you may ask yourself: what is making me feel this way? What happened earlier today that might have caused the feeling?

  • Talk about your feelings: this can help to restore a sense of control, provide perspective, and reduce the impact of stressors. (Join us at Calm Circles! Don’t worry if the theme of the session may not fully align with your struggles, we’ll still hold space for anything you’d like to share)
