Feeling overwhelmed at work? Here’s how to ask for help
We all know that work can sometimes get a bit overwhelming. In fact, our community survey revealed that work-related stress is the second biggest mental health concern among us, yet almost 75% of us still don't feel comfortable asking for help at work.
Many of us hesitate to reach out because we fear judgment, appearing incompetent, or risking job security. In workplaces where psychological safety is lacking, it’s even harder. But asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. We all need support sometimes, and it's crucial to prioritise our mental health and well-being.
Here are a few tips to get more comfortable with asking for help at work:
👣 Start small: Build confidence by asking for help on less demanding tasks and reduce anxiety around seeking support.
🖼️ Shift your mindset: Instead of viewing asking for help as a weakness, see it as self-care and a way to build resilience. It demonstrates self-awareness and a commitment to your well-being.
🗣️ Practice vulnerability in safe spaces: Start by opening up to trusted colleagues or your manager about smaller challenges to build trust and create a supportive network.
🔎 Learn from others: Notice how teammates seek and offer support, normalising help-seeking behaviour.
⚠️ Know your limits: Accept that you have strengths and limitations. Asking for help allows you to focus on your strengths and delegate tasks that may be impacting your mental well-being.
It might feel challenging at first, but with practice, reaching out for support will become easier, leading to improved mental well-being and a more positive work experience for yourself and others.
