Ways to support your colleagues’ mental health at work

Amid our busy work lives, it’s easy to overlook the fact that we all face challenges that can affect our mental well-being at work.

A supportive workplace is one where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered to bring their best selves to work. Showing support for your colleagues' mental health is easier than you might think.

Here are a few simple do's and don'ts to keep in mind.

Do:

👂 Offer a listening ear: Sometimes, all someone needs is to be heard. Let your colleagues know you're there for them if they want to talk.

❤️ Listen actively with empathy: When someone opens up about their struggles, give them your full attention and respond with empathy.

🔦 Know your resources: Familiarise yourself with the mental health resources available through your company or community.

Don’t:

🙅 Oversimplify or offer unsolicited advice: Avoid phrases like "Just cheer up",  "It's not that bad", or “Have you tried doing [this]?”.

🤨 Make assumptions or judgments: Everyone experiences mental health differently. Don't assume you know what someone is going through.

⚠️ Ignore warning signs: If you notice a colleague struggling, reach out and offer support.

By following these tips, you can contribute to a more supportive and inclusive workplace culture. Remember, even small gestures of kindness and understanding can make a big difference in someone's life.
